In the realm of health and wellness, certain topics often remain shrouded in mystery and misunderstanding. One such area is brain injury, a complex condition that affects millions yet frequently flies under the radar. Amanda McFarlane, the Executive Director of Braintrust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to this cause, offers invaluable insights into the intricacies of brain injuries, their impact, and the critical support systems necessary for those affected.

Understanding brain injuries: A closer look

Brain injuries, as Amanda explains, can stem from a myriad of causes, ranging from traumatic events like motor vehicle collisions to non-traumatic origins such as strokes or heart attacks. The term "brain injury" encompasses any disruption in brain function that occurs after birth, distinguishing it from developmental conditions. This broad definition underlines the complexity and diversity of brain injuries, highlighting the need for specialized care and support.

The Evolution of brain injury perception and treatment

Reflecting on her 13-year tenure with Braintrust, Amanda notes significant shifts in the understanding and treatment of brain injuries. The concept of neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to form new neural connections, has revolutionized the approach to recovery. Simple, yet effective strategies such as diet, exercise, and mindfulness play a crucial role in aiding those affected, offering hope for improvement beyond the previously believed seven-year recovery plateau.

The role of Braintrust: Filling the gaps in support

Braintrust emerges as a critical player in the landscape of brain injury support, addressing the gaps left by traditional healthcare systems. By coordinating with various stakeholders, from healthcare professionals to legal systems, Braintrust ensures that individuals receive the comprehensive care they need. Their work spans clinical counselling, socialization programs, and advocacy, tailored to each person's unique journey towards independence and community reintegration.

Challenges and opportunities: Funding and awareness

Despite the strides made in understanding and treating brain injuries, Amanda points out the persistent challenges in securing adequate funding and recognition for the condition. Brain injuries often receive a fraction of the funding allocated to other health issues, making it difficult to sustain and expand essential services. Moreover, the stigma surrounding brain injuries and the invisibility of the condition exacerbate these challenges, underscoring the importance of advocacy and public education.

A call to action: Supporting brain injury awareness and recovery

As Braintrust continues its vital work, the call for community support has never been more urgent. From attending fundraising events to volunteering or simply spreading the word, there are numerous ways for individuals to contribute to this cause. With one in three Canadians affected by brain injuries, the issue is closer to home than many may realize, making collective action imperative for fostering a more inclusive and supportive society.

In her conversation, Amanda not only illuminates the complexities of brain injuries but also embodies the compassion and dedication driving Braintrust's mission. Her insights serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative impact of collective effort in the face of adversity.

Celebrating 25 years of thrills: The Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom returns to Big White https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/big_white/news/Big_White_Sponsored/Celebrating_25_years_of_thrills_The_Neil_Edgeworth_Memorial_Banked_Slalom_returns_to_Big_White/ https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/big_white/news/Big_White_Sponsored/Celebrating_25_years_of_thrills_The_Neil_Edgeworth_Memorial_Banked_Slalom_returns_to_Big_White/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 13:58:00 -0700

As Big White Ski Resort gears up to host the 25th anniversary of the Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom, excitement fills the air, promising an unforgettable weekend of snowboarding fellowship. Last year, the event saw a record-breaking number of riders, and this year aims to be no exception. With its storied history and deep-rooted community spirit, the Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom is not just a competition but a gathering of the snowboarding community from all walks of life.

The legacy lives on

Named in honour of local snowboarding legend Neil Edgeworth, who tragically lost his life in an avalanche in France, this event has grown from a passionate tribute into an iconic event. It serves as a living memory to Neil and of the pioneering spirit of all snowboarders who have left their mark.

Flynn Seddon, Director of Terrain Parks and Outdoor Events at Big White, explains the spirit of the event, "We don’t call it a competition. We refer to it as a gathering, and the amount of people who are coming each year is growing. It is truly an industry event for people to get involved in and just have a good time remembering friends, hanging out and meeting new people." This sentiment echoes the foundation on which the event was built: community, support, and friendship.

A festive kick-off

The event promises to be spectacular this year, with activities and races planned throughout the weekend at TELUS Park. The festivities kick off with a Check-in Party at Happy Valley on Friday, March 29, from 7:00PM to 10:00PM. Competitors can enjoy a Banquet Dinner on Saturday at 6:00PM, and the awards ceremony is set for 4:00PM on Sunday.

What's included with registration

You can look forward to an array of benefits this year, including two runs (one on Saturday and one on Sunday), a contest T-shirt, a Banquet Dinner on Saturday, 50% off lift tickets for both days and awards for the top three in each category. The Pro Division competitors also have a chance to win a share of the $5,000 prize money. With categories ranging from Pro Division to Amateur and Para Division, the event is inclusive, encouraging snowboarders of all ages and abilities to join in the fun.

Schedule and accommodations

The weekend is packed with activities, starting with pick-up for race packets at Happy Valley Day Lodge on Friday and culminating in the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon. If you need accommodations during the event Big White Ski Resort is offering discounted rates through Central Reservations.

A community like no other

The Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom is more than just an event; it's a testament to the enduring spirit of the snowboarding community. As Tess Critchlow, an Olympic Snowboard Cross racer and five-time Canadian National Champion, who has participated in the event since she was six, puts it, "This event is all about community and being able to celebrate with my family like that really brought that feeling home." Her story is a powerful reminder of the event's impact on individual lives and careers.

Join the celebration

As we celebrate 25 years of the Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom, we invite snowboarders and their families, from seasoned pros to aspiring athletes, to join us at Big White for a weekend filled with action, friendship, and memories. With registration closing on March 27, 2024, make sure to secure your spot for what promises to be the best weekend for snowboarders at Big White.

Hefty mortgage payments 'killing the mood' this Valentine's Day https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/news/news/Real_Estate/Hefty_mortgage_payments_killing_the_mood_this_Valentine_s_Day/ https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/news/news/Real_Estate/Hefty_mortgage_payments_killing_the_mood_this_Valentine_s_Day/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 17:30:00 -0800 Well, this isn't good for love on the eve of Valentine's Day.

A recent survey indicates 52.1% of Canadians will be spending less on their romantic partner this Valentine's Day because they've had rent or mortgage payment stress over the past year.

67.3% said they would or would likely skip Valentine's Day with their lover in order to save for a mortgage down payment.

And, maybe most shocking of all, 44.5% of Canadians would rather save money for a down payment on a house or condominium than 'be in love.'

The survey was done by www.360lending.ca, the online Canadian mortgage brokerage that specializes in mortgage refinancing, home equity loans and home equity lines of credit.

360Lending's news release on the survey contained verbiage such as 'cash is cancelling cupid,' 'bad romance?' 'love on the rocks,' and 'limited engagement.'

"We're seeing that higher mortgage (interest) rates are seriously costing Canadians love, relationships and generally joy," said Ringo So, mortgage agent and managing partner of 360Lending.

"The reality is that Canadians have more options than they think. Homeowners need to speak with a mortgage professional if their monthly mortgage payments are mucking up their lives (romantic and otherwise."

Survey findings go well beyond high mortgage payments interfering with Valentine's Day.

When Canadians were asked what they've done lately to afford their mortgage 24% said they aren't travelling, 17% never go out, 11% are cancelling streaming services such as Netflix, 9% only take public transit, 9% aren't having kids and 7% are 'living on Kraft Dinner.'

Meantime, another survey by www.wahi.com, which matches consumers with realtors, in conjunction with Angus Reid Forum, finds romance and home ownership is compatible.

The survey found that 77% of Canadian homeowners bought their property with their romantic partner.

47% of BC respondents said purchasing a home with their partner improved their relationship, while the majority said the transaction had no impact on their romance.

Only 3% said buying a home with their lover made their relationship worse.

Of that small minority that experienced trouble with their relationships, the major contributors were problems that arose with the property after purchase and financial strain of the mortgage and maintenance.

85% of couples agreed on a budget going into a home purchase in an effort to live within their means.

Oh my, sex with yourself now part of Hotel Zed's naughty Valentine's Day 'nooner' special https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Hotel_Zed_gets_naughtier_with_it_s_Valentine_s_nooner_offerings/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Hotel_Zed_gets_naughtier_with_it_s_Valentine_s_nooner_offerings/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 14:20:00 -0800 Solo sex has officially joined Hotel Zed's pleasure-soaked Valentine's Day 'nooner' campaign.

"People have fantastic sex in hotel rooms, and that includes sex with yourself," said Mandy Farmer, CEO of Hotel Zed, which has locations in Kelowna, Victoria and Tofino.

"With the 'Self-Love Nooner,' we're giving you permission to put yourself at the top of your 'to-do list' this Valentine's Day. Taking an extended lunch break to focus on your own pleasure? Now, that's a wonderful way to give your mind and body a boost."

This year's 'nooner' edition is suggestively dubbed 'Come as You Are' and puts solo sex front and centre.

The three-hour afternoon delight package includes use of a virtual reality Meta Quest 3 headset loaded with 'ethically sourced' sexy content to help rev you up.

It was a decade ago when Hotel Zed, which has always positioned itself as funky, quirky, cutting-edge and retro, launched the 'nooner' package for Valentine's Day, urging couples to indulge in some mid-day carnal fun.

The offer, on Valentine's Day only, was a room at Hotel Zed from 11 am to 2 pm for the spicy price of $69.

The campaign blew up the traditional Valentine's scene of Cupid's roses and chocolates and an overpriced dinner out and received tons of attention for its innovation, frankness and sultriness.

Hotel Zed is a advocate of every mid-day Valentine's rebel hopping on the love train, regardless of gender, sexual orientation and relationship status and whether it be for a solo mission or shared with a partner.

Over the years, the 'nooner' has also latched onto some annual themes such as 'nooner babymaker,' 'all the love from A to Zed' and 'shaggin' wagon' (a nod to the hotel's signature retro VW vans.)

The 'babymaker' edition rewarded the couple that welcomed an infant nine months later with free stays at Hotel Zed every Valentine's Day for the next 18 years and a flurry of publicity.

This year's self-love theme is also aimed at starting the conversation about wellness and sexual health.

Of course, you waste time at work https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Of_course_you_waste_time_at_work/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Of_course_you_waste_time_at_work/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 06:30:00 -0800 Well, this is shocking -- or not.

89% of us, apparently, waste time at work.

For around 31%, it amounts to about 30 minutes a day.

But, for the worst offenders -- the top 10% of wasters -- they widdle away upwards of three hours a day -- that's 15 hours a week -- on everything from idle co-worker chit-chat, checking social media, surfing the web, daydreaming, online shopping and personal errands and business.

The data was compiled from various wasting time at work surveys by TeamShape, the maker of project management apps and software.

Former IBM vice-president and TEDx speaker Shelmina Babai Abji used that time-wasting trending as inspiration for her new book -- Show Your Worth: 8 Intentional Strategies for Women to Emerge as Leaders at Work.

"In order to maximize your achievement, you must focus your attention on your highest priorities by structuring your days around them," said Abji.

"Pay special attention to scheduling the most challenging tasks at the most opportune time for you -- in terms of both the day of the week and what time of the day works best. Personally, I schedule my most challenging tasks early in the day at the start of the week, as that's when I'm at my absolute best. This also starts my day and week off with a big win, because I completed a hard task early, giving me momentum to keep executing my other tasks."

Of course, all that is easier said than done.

20% of workers waste big swaths of time at work because they are bored and disinterested by their job.

7% report no job satisfaction at all and 2% waste time because they feel they are not paid enough.

While pride in your work and self-motivation and good time management can come from within the employee, it is ultimately the employer's responsibility to do effective worker on-boarding, offer interesting work, on-the-job training and opportunities for wellness, promotion and reward for productivity.

The key is setting intentions to say no to time wasters and yes to productivity and follow through, according to Abji.

Some of the biggest time wasters at work -- no surprise -- are checking email (some workers do it 121 times a day), browsing social media (up to an hour and a half a day) and surfing the web and online shopping.

91% of workers admit to daydreaming at work and in meetings.

Many workers are distracted every 11 minutes and it then takes 25 minutes to refocus.

To increase productivity, the ideal cycle is 52 minutes of focused work, followed by a short break that can be as simple as going to the washroom, grabbing a cup of coffee, checking social media quickly, making that short personal call or having a passing collaboration or hello with a coworker.

Employers should streamline email and meeting communications, allowing workers to focus more.

Don't leave your email on all day and check most emails within 6 seconds of them arriving.

Finish an important task then check your email, reset priorities and then focus on the most important task next.

If you're a manager, don't get caught in the 'task trap.'

Delegate tasks that you can and focus on your top priorities.

Building financial security in a world of change: Expert guidance from Silvi Malinowski https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Building_financial_security_in_a_world_of_change_Expert_guidance_from_Silvi_Malinowski/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Building_financial_security_in_a_world_of_change_Expert_guidance_from_Silvi_Malinowski/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 19:50:00 -0800

If you're worried about your investments or saving for retirement, you're not alone. Today's economy, influenced by multiple factors, can make financial stability seem elusive. Silvi Malinowski of ATB Wealth lends her expertise to navigating these financial uncertainties.

Amid both domestic and global events impacting market stability, Malinowski stresses the importance of strategic financial planning. She emphasizes the need for an adaptable approach to personal finance and investment strategies in light of recent economic shifts, offering insights into creating a financial plan that is both resilient and responsive to changing economic conditions.

The role of financial planning in uncertain times

Adaptability is key: "It's like planning a winter driving trip; you need to be prepared for what’s ahead," Malinowski suggests. Her analogy underscores the importance of foresight and preparation, enabling individuals to navigate economic uncertainties without losing sight of their long-term goals.

Personalized financial strategies for stability

Customization for individual needs: Malinowski advocates for personalized strategies, considering factors like cash flow and retirement timing. This approach ensures that financial plans are robust and responsive to both market conditions and personal circumstances.

Understanding the emotional impact of financial decisions

Emotional resonance matters: Malinowski highlights the emotional aspect of financial planning. She advises on the importance of aligning financial choices with personal comfort levels and goals, ensuring plans resonate both practically and emotionally. This is also why it's important to build a relationship with your financial advisor that allows you to be open and honest about your goals and current circumstances. They are your partner as you navigate important decisions with long-term impacts.

Investment strategies in complex economic times

Expertise over DIY: Malinowski notes the challenges of managing finances in line with market trends. "For most individuals, navigating these complexities is a significant undertaking," she says. She explains that professional portfolio managers of ETFs and mutual funds focus on studying market movements and adjusting strategies, a task most individuals don't have the time or resources for. Utilizing ATB’s expertise can alleviate the burden of constant market monitoring.

Long-term perspective on financial goals

Breaking down goals: "Breaking down large goals into smaller, manageable steps and regularly reviewing these helps individuals navigate through short-term market changes without losing sight of their long-term objectives,” Malinowski advises. This approach helps align evolving life goals with market volatility.

Silvi Malinowski's insights provide a vital roadmap for navigating financial stability in today's dynamic global economy. Her advice highlights the importance of personalization in financial planning.

Recognizing that everyone's financial journey is unique, she recommends custom-tailored plans that align with individual goals, financial circumstances, and emotional well-being. This personalized approach ensures that strategies adapt to the ever-changing economic landscape and deeply resonate with individual aspirations and concerns, aiding in building financial resilience amidst economic uncertainties.

The need for a memory box and baby book

What to include in your memory box

Curating your own memory box is a treasured part of the process. Essential items might include the hospital bracelet, first shoes, favorite toys, or even letters to your future child. Ugh, it's Blue Monday -- the most depressing day of the year https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Ugh_it_s_Blue_Monday_the_most_depressing_day_of_the_year/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Ugh_it_s_Blue_Monday_the_most_depressing_day_of_the_year/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 06:30:00 -0800 What a slog January is.

It's cold and gloomy.

It feels like one long post-Christmas, post-New-Year's-Eve hangover.

Bills from the festive season are due, pushing you further into debt.

Your new year resolutions conveniently failed two weeks ago.

Work's a drag.

Your vacation in the sun is either a no-go or not for weeks and weeks.

And all motivation and joy have flown out the window.

It all culminates on the third Monday of January, which, unhappily, is today -- January 15.

It actually has a name -- Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year.

However, it's only been so called since January 2004 when Welsh psychologist Dr. Cliff Arnall declared it so to help a travel company sell holidays to people who were sick and tired of the dreary UK winter.

In other words, it's unscientific or pseudoscience, but catchy because we all seem to jump on the Blue Monday bandwagon.

"It's not necessarily a day," said Natalie Macdonald, a registered therapeutic counsellor in Penticton.

"It's more of a January thing. We've come off the holidays, January doesn't have a lot to offer, it's dark and cold and long. Plus, there's the money stress that comes after the holidays and your resolutions have probably gone off the rails."

But rather than just pile on the bleakness, as a registered therapeutic counsellor, Macdonald has handy tips for getting through this funk.

"You can have a breakthrough and start living your best life any month of the year," she said.

"I encourage everyone to find their joy, to have things to look forward to, so they don't fall into depression."

Macdonald's joy is helping people, obviously, but also getting all the appropriate gear to regularly cycle outside this winter.

"It's my thing," she said with a laugh.

"Your thing could be as simple as finding time for a quiet cup of tea or coffee, baking or spending more time with your kids. Definitely don't give up your hobbies or pick up a new hobby."

Even cleaning your house or fixing something, which initially sound like chores, may bring you joy because you'll have a feeling of accomplishment.

Macdonald is also big on taking care of herself and urging others to do the same.

"Eating right, sleeping well and physical activity are the base of self-care," she said.

"It will help you feel better physically and emotionally and manage stress better."

The counsellor is also a huge advocate of having gratitude for what you have, forgiving yourself for what you haven't accomplished yet or can't do and setting healthy work-life boundaries.

She also urges people to only use social media positively, otherwise it's a downer.

Overall, Macdonald is a champion of setting intentions that only bring more positivity, not negativity, into your life.

"Rather than make a resolution to lose 20 pounds, set an intention to learn how to love your body and learn how to eat better and get more exercise," she explained.

"That way you're doing something positive in your life rather than feeling depressed if a resolution doesn't completely work out."

Feeling blue at this point in January doesn't necessarily mean you're depressed.

It's probably just a seasonal low that will pass and will pass faster if you find your joy as Macdonald suggested.

"But, thus said, seasonal affective disorder is real and is a type of depression, a chemical in the brain, triggered by lack of daylight," said Macdonald.

"If people feel like they'd benefit from talking to a counsellor, they should reach out to a counsellor."

We'll leave you with this.

Blue Monday has spurred a knock-off movement called Brew Monday, which urges you to calm down and relax over a mug of coffee, tea or beer.

“I was initially concerned it would be impossible to find someone that would fit in with my family and be within the level of care I could provide,” explains Aleesha “, but Pathways’ home share coordinators did a great job of talking with me about the level care I felt I could provide and time I could commit.”

Pathways worked with Aleesha, introducing her to a handful of individuals and doing a few short stays before she ultimately chose to be paired with Rose.

Aleesha believes living with Rose has allowed her children to become “more open and loving,” and she’s found it extremely fulfilling to provide Rose with a safe space to enjoy independence and a loving family to lean on for support.

“It is an amazing experience to provide a home and family to someone who needs or wants it. You become more aware of the care and love that all people yearn for and realize that regardless of our mental or physical abilities, we are all humans that want to belong and experience a life filled with joy, love, and laughter,” explains Aleesha.

Provide meaningful support

Everyone relies on their network to add vibrancy, joy and social enjoyment into their lives. And it’s no different for those with diverse abilities.

However, these individuals in particular may encounter certain roadblocks that require further assistance from their support system. Whether that be transportation to and from work, a listening ear after a long day, or a safe and comfortable place to live.

Through Pathways’ Home Share service, you have the opportunity to provide this kind of meaningful and transformative support and be compensated for it!

How does home sharing work?

Home Share is more than just opening up your home to another person. As a provider, you create a safe and respectful environment to foster independence and growth.

“It’s about being together through good times and bad; it’s growing together,” says Laryssa Rock, home share Coordination Manager.

Each individual is unique, and they may require more attentive or passive support from their provider.

Some examples of assistance they may require includes support with health, wellness, personal support, transportation, personal and civic responsibilities, recreation, socialization or domestic life skills. The things we all do day-to-day!

But don’t worry, Pathways Abilities Society matches you up with someone whose needs match your support capabilities!

Who can become a home share provider?

You don’t have to hold specific beliefs, look or act a certain way to be a Home Share provider- anyone with good intentions and the ability to offer support can apply!

“We need Home Share providers from all walks of life because we have people from all walks of life,” explains Rock.

After all, individuals with diverse abilities are just that, people with unique skills, capabilities, values and lifestyles, and their personalities and beliefs vary just as much as the next person.

Pathways Abilities Society works hard to ensure individuals are paired with providers who have complementary values and lifestyles to encourage smooth sailing during their time spent together.

Rock says “It’s a two-way system, we want both parties to be happy with the match.”

What is sleep hygiene? And why is it so important? https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/What_is_sleep_hygiene_And_why_is_it_so_important/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/What_is_sleep_hygiene_And_why_is_it_so_important/ Tue, 28 Feb 2023 06:00:00 -0800 Your personal hygiene can be dirty or clean or somewhere in between.

So can your sleep hygiene.

The dictionary defines hygiene as conditions and-or practices conducive to maintaining health and preventing disease, especially through cleanliness.

So just as a soapy, daily shower works wonders for personal hygiene, a consistent bedtime, reducing screen time, exercise, a cool room and light and noise blocking can clean up your sleep hygiene and have you enjoying better quality and quantity of Zs.

Hush, a Canadian bedding and mattress brand, recently issued a five-point plan for a better night's sleep.

Obviously, Hush has an ulterior motive in that it wants to sell more mattresses and bedding to you in your quest for dreamy shut eye.

But Hush's suggestions are meant to work regardless of mattress and bedding brand.

"Sleep is a vital part of our daily routine, and while many may think that a cup of coffee can help on those days suffering from little sleep, it's only a short-term solution," reads Hush's manifesto.

"Understanding the importance of good, quality sleep hygiene is crucial, as lack of rest can lead to many problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes and depression. With these simple tips, you can drastically improve your sleep hygiene to ensure that you are well rested at night."

1. Consistent bedtime routines help match your body's circadian rhythm to your desired turn-in time.

Go to bed at the same time every night after a wind-down period, washing your face and brushing your teeth to allow your body to associate sleep with that routine to release natural melatonin, the sleep hormone.

2. Wind-down

The blue light from screens delays production of natural melatonin, so instead of watching TV or scrolling on your phone just before bed, opt for reading, a warm bath or meditation.

3. Daily exercise isn't just good for your physical health, but your mental health and your sleep.

Exercise first invigorates then makes you tired for a good night's sleep.

Therefore, make sure you hit the gym or go for that run at least three hours before bedtime.

In the same health category, don't eat too much or drink alcohol too much before bedtime.

4. Block out light and noise for the best night's sleep.

Go for blackout curtains if you can, wear an eye mask, shut the bedroom door and consider a white noise machine.

5. A cool room triggers your body's natural instinct to sleep.

So turn down the thermostat before bedtime in the winter, keep the air conditioning on in the summer, add a fan if your room tends to be stuffy or crack a window to let cool air in (if it doesn't also let in extra noise, of course).

6. Hush didn't include these items on its list, but one would imagine that reducing stress, sleeping with a non-snoring partner you love and comfy pajamas (or nothing at all) will also be conducive to sleep.

In reverse, if you have erratic bedtimes, love binging TV shows late into the night, try to slumber in a stuffy, noisy room and haven't bothered exercising in eons, you can expect a less than stellar night's sleep.

Kickstart your livestreaming journey with this exciting summer opportunity https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Kickstart_your_livestreaming_journey_with_this_exciting_summer_opportunity/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Kickstart_your_livestreaming_journey_with_this_exciting_summer_opportunity/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 13:00:00 -0800

A passion for content, film, or writing can flourish into a career that is both fulfilling and rewarding. But gaining the skills and experience necessary to pursue that career can be challenging. Luckily, there are programs like TELUS STORYHIVE’s Summer Crew 2.0, designed with the sole purpose of supporting you on your journey.

What is TELUS STORYHIVE’s Summer Crew 2.0?

Summer Crew is an opportunity for aspiring creatives to gain experience in livestreaming, develop interview skills, and learn how to drive their online presence.

This unique 14-week summer program enlists 14 crews from different regions across B.C. and Alberta to livestream their community. They provide microgrants, equipment and training to kickstart their livestreaming and content creation journey. Each crew consists of two teammates, so you can apply with a co-creator/friend or apply on your own and you’ll be paired up.

Throughout the program, crews will create editorial calendars, track their expenses and produce two hours of local, G-rated content weekly. STORYHIVE provides crews with robust video editing software and access to a portal from which they can edit their content. Weekly content will also be broadcasted to a large audience on TELUS Optik TV and STORYHIVE’s online platforms.

Whether you’re an aspiring livestreamer, budding historian or storyteller that loves your community, this program is for you. No experience is required to apply!

Pursue your passion

Since 2013, STORYHIVE has been able to help empower a community of thousands of local content creators across B.C. and Alberta, providing over $52 million in production funding and creating a safe space for storytellers to hone their skills and bring the projects they care about to life— and you could be one of them.

"For me personally I overcame this odd voice in my head that told me ‘I should never be on camera," says Gabby Moukhaiber, 2022 Summer Crew alumnus.

Gabby and his crewmate, Rekha Kapadia, took advantage of the opportunity to “experience being out of our comfort zone,” with each of them taking on roles they had little experience in.

Gabby, who had started his own video and content creation company, came into the program with experience being behind the camera. Over the summer he developed confidence in being on camera, conducting interviews, and sharing his voice.

Summer Crew 2.0 is the perfect environment to pursue your passion, and expand your understanding of the journalism and broadcasting industry.

Keil Hunka joined the program as an illustrator and graphic designer, who also had an interest in film. Access to Summer Crew's resources and equipment allowed them to find a new passion in video production.

“Video was always something I wanted to break into but didn’t know how, so this felt like the perfect opportunity,” explains Hunka, “the Summer Crew program really made it accessible to learn the industry and the techniques behind making quality content.”

Elevate community voices

STORYHIVE wants to support your content creation journey so you can support the voices of your community!

This opportunity gives you a platform to create content that makes an impact and “offer coverage to people or businesses that otherwise may haven’t had the chance to spread word about what they do,” adds Hunka.

Last year's alumni, Raquelle Roodenburg and Kristina Lao, ran a podcast prior to entering the program, interviewing over 60 individuals. But they were interested in the prospect of improving their process and taking on a challenge.

Along with crushing those goals, they found a love for community.

Summer Crew gave them the confidence and tools to make new relationships and showcase parts of their community that they felt needed to be shared, “there are amazing people right around every corner, doing incredible things, and we loved getting to know every one of them,” concludes Raquelle.

How to apply

Ready to take on a summer of creating and learning? It’s time to go live. Apply to Summer Crew 2.0 today!

Applications intake is open from February 15th to March 24th, 2023.

Most of us won't bother to celebrate Valentine's Day https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Most_of_us_won_t_bother_to_celebrate_Valentine_s_Day/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Lifestyle/Most_of_us_won_t_bother_to_celebrate_Valentine_s_Day/ Tue, 14 Feb 2023 04:30:00 -0800 Uh oh, is love in trouble in Canada?

Or, is it just Valentine's Day that brings out the unromantic curmudgeon in us?

Recent surveys show that 70% of Canadians don't consider Valentine's Day to be a real holiday (like Christmas, Canada Day and Labour Day are), six of ten people feel the day isn't important, 57% think it's just a commercial cash grab and 53% won't bother to celebrate Valentine's Day in anyway, shape or form.

This is shocking considering Valentine's messaging is everywhere with stores stuffed with cards espousing love, heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and balloons, red flowers and lingerie, restaurants encouraging you to eat out, spas touting couples' massages and wineries suggesting pink, red and sparkling wines.

But maybe that's the point -- Canadians are pushing back against the commercialization of a day in which they can do love on the cheap by simply going for a walk with their loved one or sharing a quiet meal and glass of wine at home.

The 70% anti-holiday number comes from a survey of 1,000 Canadians done by Time2play, an online gambling site, so we'll allow you to draw your own conclusion on how reliable the information is or isn't.

The Time2play survey's questions were aimed at Canadians who are currently in a relationship, engaged or married, the average age was 35 and almost 60% were women.

As such, the 70% not giving Valentine's holiday credence is mixed in with a bunch of pro-Valentine's sentiment.

Such as, 70% are making Valentine's plans with their partner and 40% prefer a romantic evening at home with their loved one.

BC residents will spend the most -- an average of $129 on Valentine's Day, so that's a lot of dinners out, flowers, chocolates and cards with hearts and Cupid's bows on them.

By way of comparison, Quebec is a close second in spending at $115 and those in New Brunswick will spend the least at $60.

Those numbers don't necessarily mean BC is the most romantic and New Brunswick the least.

Maybe lovers in New Brunswick concentrate on a romantic evening in with their own food and wine while British Columbians feel the pressure to go out to dinner and spend bigger.

It was an older Forum Research survey that labelled 60% of Canadians feeling Valentine's is not important and 53% stating they won't be celebrating the day in the least.

While the Time2play survey focused on people in romantic relationships, it recognized that February is the month of love for everyone, whether they be dating, engaged or married or single and into self-care or celebrating with friends and family.

After all, Galentine's is a thing as single women get together on the day to celebrate, usually with wine.

In fact, some say that single women can have the best time on Valentine's Day because there's no pressure and no chance of being disappointed by a man.

Why are clothes still gender-specific? https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Why_are_clothes_still_gender_specific_1/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Why_are_clothes_still_gender_specific_1/ Sat, 28 Jan 2023 11:00:00 -0800 While society has made leaps and bounds in viewing sexual preference, gender identity and other concepts as non-binary, why is the same not true for our clothes?

Some people have made the argument that men and women are shaped differently, but regardless of your gender, I'm sure you can think of numerous times you've tried on an article of clothing and been met with disappointment.

Shape-specific instead of gender-specific

Many of us have experienced the feeling that certain articles of clothing aren’t made with our body type in mind — and we’re not wrong.

For centuries, clothes have been tailored to the average shape and size of a man or woman.

But what do you do if you aren’t the “average shape”, and who decides what the average shape is anyways?

Some of the more high-end and expensive corners of the fashion world have begun producing gender neutral and shape inclusive clothing. But, affordable clothes that look and feel good can still be hard to find for many.

It feels inherently wrong that owning comfortable and well-fitting clothes could be a luxury for some people.

What if instead of indirectly shaming those who fall outside of the projected norm, companies made clothes that are more inclusive?

While we can’t expect affordable clothing to be tailored to our exact shape, brands could start by producing and merchandising based on body shape rather than gender.

What do you think?

Do you think clothes should be shape-specific instead of gender-specific? Will the fashion industry ever abandon gender-specific clothing?

Contest Closed: Win a winter getaway to Osoyoos (a $500 value!) https://www.kelownanow.comhttps://featured.kelownanow.com/win-a-winter-getaway-to-Osoyoos-contest/ https://www.kelownanow.comhttps://featured.kelownanow.com/win-a-winter-getaway-to-Osoyoos-contest/ Mon, 23 Jan 2023 12:22:00 -0800 Are you smarter than a fifth grader? https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Are_you_smarter_than_a_fifth_grader/ https://www.kelownanow.com/news/news/Sponsored/Are_you_smarter_than_a_fifth_grader/ Fri, 13 Jan 2023 12:30:00 -0800 It seems the older I get, the more apparent it becomes that some people –myself included– somehow missed basic facts or skills that the rest of the universe seems to have learned eons ago.

As it turns out, it’s easy to go through huge chunks of life without realizing you're missing seemingly basic knowledge. That is, until it pops up one day at work or amongst friends, and to your embarrassment, you're speechless!

Most of us think we have our basics down. Afterall, we know how to make ourselves food, clean up, get to work, be efficient at work, go home, and maybe even take part in some cool hobby or sport.

But you may be surprised by how many seemingly fundamental things you’ve never actually picked up on.

5 things you should probably know:

1. The number of days in each month of the year

Some of you are probably already singing the tune your teachers (or parents) taught you years ago to help this important piece of information stick. Or perhaps, you’ve got your hands in fists, counting each knuckle as you murmur months under your breath. Another portion of you may have simply forgotten.

Not all of us though, some of us don’t know and we never did.

If you’re part of this party, there’s no need to fret. There are lots of quick tricks to fill this knowledge gap, and if worse comes to worst, there’s always a calendar to reference in our tech driven society.

2. How to not get duped

Some of us grew up learning the rules of society, and taking them at face value. Others, found joy in questioning those rules and bending them to their advantage instead. It seems the world is chalk full of opportunities and offers that, upon closer examination, deceptively benefit someone else.

So, if you never learned how to raise your fist to "the man", this is your chance:

  • You don’t need to wait for a free trial to expire before canceling.

How many times have you accidentally paid for a year-long subscription to a service you intended to use for a single day?

Save yourself the anguish and just cancel it when you’re done. If for some reason you forget, always contact customer service with a sob sorry. I can’t guarantee it’ll always work, but I’ve managed to get out of some pretty pricey accidental subscriptions with a solid sob story.

  • When the grocery store says buy three get two dollars off, you don’t actually have to buy three.

I will admit that this is not the case for all grocery stores, and they’re increasingly catching on. But, if there’s anything my parents taught me that actually did stick, it was this.

  • You should pay off your credit card in full every month.

I know this isn't always an option, depending on your income and expenses, but it’s important that you know carrying a balance on your credit card is never a good idea.

Not only can it lead to nasty interest payments and decrease your credit score, but it can also create the illusion that you should continue spending outside of your means, which usually ends up costing you even more in the long run. If you don’t want to take it from me, take a look at what Chase Bank and Bank of America have to say!

3. You can’t breathe and swallow at the same time

I think this goes without saying, but incase you didn't know, now you know.

Speaking of breathing, you should probably know that air isn’t mostly oxygen. It’s actually mainly made up of nitrogen!

4. Water doesn’t mix with oil

Some of us may have been too busy daydreaming during our chemistry courses and missed a pretty important fact of life: water and oil don’t mix!

I won’t go into the chemistry of why this is – we have google for that – but I will point out that this is why soap cleans oil off your skin, and why you should always avoid putting out a grease fire with water. Trust me, the result isn’t pretty.

5. How things work

I know what you’re thinking, “I use stuff all the time, I know how things work.” Before you roll your eyes, ask yourself this: If you had to take apart your coffee machine, bike, car, toilet, or phone, would you be able to put it back together? Odds are the answer is no.

Now, I’m not saying this is basic knowledge, but maybe it should be? Shouldn’t you know how things you use on a daily basis function?

The more you know

Did you discover a gap in your knowledge today? Can you think of any common ones I’ve missed? Let us know what you think!

Can you afford to keep living in BC? https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/news/news/Finance/Can_you_afford_to_keep_living_in_BC/ https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/news/news/Finance/Can_you_afford_to_keep_living_in_BC/ Mon, 09 Jan 2023 06:00:00 -0800 If the pandemic resulted in one good thing, it opened people’s eyes to the life they want to live– and where they want to live it.

Coincidentally, a lot of people decided BC was the place to create this life. In fact, 2021 was the highest on record for net migration since 1961, with year-end data from Statistics Canada stating over 100,000 people made the decision to move to beautiful BC throughout the year.

Who can blame them? With 6,000 km of hiking trails, beautiful waterways, loungeable coast lines and bustling cities, BC seems like the perfect place to work and play.

But are the majority of us living out our dreams comfortably here in BC?

What does living wage mean?

The living wage is the amount of money a household has to earn per hour to cover the cost of living, as in a roof over your head, food on the table, child care, transportation and modest recreation – basic economic security.

Keep in mind that living wage values do not include savings for things like homeownership or retirement, or the cost of children's education. And they certainly do not account for the cost of caring for a disabled or ill family member.

Although the definition of a typical household can vary region to region, according to Living Wages for Families BC, the most common family unit in BC includes two parents and two kiddos, thus that is the household size considered when calculating these values.

The calculation of living wages includes income from employment plus income from government transfers, minus EI and CPP premiums, federal and provincial taxes.

Living wages city to city

When you think of expensive places to live, you probably think of Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna, at least as far as BC is concerned.

But as it turns out, the ski towns of BC take the cake.

Whilst Metro-Vancouver and Victoria sit high on the list at $24.08 per hour and $24.29 per hour respectively, Golden, BC, a tourist destination that is home to a world class ski resort, is actually more expensive, topping out at $25.56 per hour!

Other ski towns like Revelstoke, which sits at $23.60, and Fernie, at $23.58, also seem to be roughly a dollar per hour more expensive than Kelowna, which sits at $22.88 per hour.

This year, the living wage in many cities rose at a faster rate than the rate of inflation, with Kelowna’s going up 27.3%, Victoria’s going up 18.7% and Metro Vancouver’s going up 17.3%.

So if you’re living in one of those cities and your wage didn’t increase at a similar rate in the past year, you’re probably feeling the sting.

Who can afford it?

Whilst some of us are comfortably coasting through life in BC with a beefy salary, others are struggling with food security.

According to Statistics Canada, the average hourly wage in BC for full-time workers was $32.46 in 2021. However, the median wage stood at a significantly lower $29.33, suggesting that most people actually make less than $32.46, but a smaller population of higher earners are skewing the statistic.

Of course, there are lots of factors to consider when discussing wages.

Wages are slightly different for men and women in BC. According to the same statistic, the average wage for men was $34.35, and $30.31 for women, while the median wage for men was $31.54 and $26.50 for women.

The industry you’re employed in also has an impact on your wage.

Stats Canada reports that the median wage for full-time workers, across both sexes, in forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil and gas, or public administration make almost $10 more per hour on average than those working in manufacturing, and almost $20 more on average than those in accommodation and food services.

Minimum wage vs living wage

So, now that we understand what the living wage is and we’ve talked a bit about compensation, let’s look at the minimum wage.

The minimum wage is the lowest wage rate an employer is allowed to pay an employee. In Canada, this value varies depending on your province and territory.

As of June 1, 2022, the minimum wage in BC sits at $15.65.

In 2021, the BC Ministry of Labour reported that 6% of employees earned minimum wage or less – 52% of those employees were over the age of 25, and 58% of them were women.

Considering that in 2021, the minimum wage was $15.65 per hour, and the living wage ranged between $16.33 per hour to $20.52, depending on the city – at least 136,000 people in BC did not make a living wage that year.

How does the future look?

According to a long-term economic forecast from TD Bank, rising interest rates will likely take a toll on both spending and hiring through 2024. However, the forecast also predicts that inflation probably peaked this year, so price pressures should begin to ease.

Additionally, Eckler’s Compensation Planning Survey for 2022, which gathered responses from 269 organizations, tells us 44% of organizations are unsure about 2023 salary changes, leaving the compensation market unpredictable and reliant heavily on economic factors and labour force pressure.

BC’s Labour Market Outlook is forecasting that there will be more than one million job openings in the next ten years, with 80% of them requiring post-secondary education or training of some sort.

Further, over half of those jobs will amass into five industry groups: health care and social care, professional, scientific and technical services, retail trade, construction, and accommodation or food services.

So it might be a good idea to crank the volume on the “go to college” message for family members who will be entering the workforce in the next ten years!

However, if for whatever reason that is not an option, BC’s Labour Market Outlook 2021 also says about 85,000 jobs in skilled trades with excellent earning potential will be available over the next 10 years.

What do you think?

Can you afford to keep living in BC? Let us know!
