Viral app FaceApp posing security concerns

If your Facebook timeline is full of pictures depicting your friends, family and coworkers aged 50 years, you’re not alone.

FaceApp has taken the internet by storm and created a viral sensation in just 24 hours, but with so many people using the app, many people have brought up some serious security concerns.

The app’s terms of use agreement certainly doesn’t leave any holes when comes to what they own once you download and use their service.

You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform and display your User Content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed, without compensation to you.

It adds that once you sign up, FaceApp has consent to use your name, likeness, voice or persona, “sufficient to indicate the individual’s identity.”

In addition to the iron-clad terms of use, people have been quick to point out that FaceApp is a Russian company, which has added to a mild sense of panic.

This doesn’t mean the Russian government is going to spy on your, steal your credit card information and leave you homeless.

According to Forbes, however, it means your face could pop up on a billboard in Moscow and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it.

It’s not just the photos you use on the app that the Russian company, Wireless Labs, owns.

Rackpsace manager Rob La Gesse said today that the app will also gain access to your entire camera roll, along with your Siri and search functions, as soon as you hit accept on its terms of use agreement.

While the app and its parent company haven’t showed any signs of doing anything nefarious with you information, it’s still something to be aware of as you strive for those social media likes.

Nonetheless, more than 100-million people have downloaded FaceApp and it shows no signs of slowing down just yet.
