JoeAnna's House given $1.5M donation by volunteer-run businesses

Four volunteer-run businesses have announced a $1.5 million donation for JoeAnna’s House in Kelowna.

The KGH Foundation-run companies – The Perking Lot, Royal Bistro, Centennial Mercantile and Rutland Thrift Store – began fundraising in October 2017.

JoeAnna’s House, which will offer accommodation to the families of out-of-town patients at Kelowna General, is set to open before Christmas.

Hundreds of volunteers gave their free time so that 100% of the cash from coffees, croissants, gifts and entrees went straight into the project.

Nancy Wells, the director of business enterprises at the KGH Foundation, said all the volunteers should be “very proud”.

“What an accomplishment,” she said.

“Our volunteers come from all walks of life – from university students to empty nesters to retirees – everyone has given the gift of time and we couldn’t do this without you.”

She added: “Every four-hour volunteer shift represents a position we don’t have to pay a wage for, which cuts our overhead and increases our fundraising potential. And for our money-making ventures in the hospital and Rutland, it just means more opportunities to fund equipment and patient-care innovations not currently covered through our taxes.”
