A bizarre overnight incident near Bear Creek Provincial Park ended with a man being brought into custody this morning.
West Kelowna RCMP was called to the scene around 1 am after a man reportedly jumped in front of a vehicle on Westside Road and tried to hit the vehicle with an object.
When officers arrived, they found the man believed to be connected with the complaint, who was in the park and carrying garden shears.
Attempts to arrest him led to an altercation and the suspect was shot, but still fled from officers and ended up in Okanagan Lake.
Eventually, he made his way onto a log boom and police started to negotiate with him in the dark.
Additional officers were called in to assist those on scene, along with an RCMP boat, and the man was eventually taken into custody without further incident around 7:20 am.
He received immediate medical assistance, but his injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
The scene was secured and the Independent Investigation Office of BC has been deployed to investigate the police-involved shooting.
Meanwhile, West Kelowna RCMP will continue to investigate the initial complaint and are looking to speak to any witnesses who haven’t already talked to police.
